New Staff
Paul Hames joined Graphic Services' Photography unit in August as a Senior Photographer. Mr. Hames is a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York with a degree in Photojournalism. He has worked at Travis Air Force Base and Lawrence Berkeley Labs, as well as maintaining his own business as a commercial photographer for many years. Paul has considerable digital photography experience and over twenty-nine years in the photographic industry. Stop by the unit's fourth floor offices, 440-8, and introduce yourself.
Digital Imaging
Because of our increasing digital photography work, we've remodeled two former darkrooms into a new digital imaging area. We've also purchased and implemented new equipment including: an Encad NovaJet Pro large format color inkjet printer for producing large graphic and presentation materials, posters, and banners up to 36" wide; a Kodak dye-sublimation color printer for digital prints up to 8.5" x 11"; and for prepress, a high quality Agfa Horizon Plus color flatbed scanner for digitizing reflective art and transparencies. Contact Dale Kolke, Supervisor of the Photography unit, at (916) 653-6385 for a tour and an overview of our new digital photography capabilities.
New Images in Cypress
Approximately 17,601 DWR images are now on-line in the Cypress digital image database. New images are added each month. Check the Category and/or Subject listing to see the data in the current collection. Contact us if you have water industry related images you would like included, or for personal or group demo's of Cypress.
Official Photographers
The California Gold Discovery to Statehood Sesquicentennial Commission has chosen DWR's Photography unit as the official Sesquicentennial photographers. In addition to chronicling Commission and Foundation functions, coverage of special events is planned this year and throughout the celebration, January 24, 1988 - September 9, 2000. All photographs will become part of the event's archives.
January 1997 Flood Photography
Graphic Services staff filmed and organized extensive aerial and ground video and photography documentation of California's historic January 1997 floods to help flood management officials meet planning and flood-fight needs. Film/Video and Photography staff flew over 18 missions in the Bell Jet Ranger helicopter during the period January 2-17, 1997. Coverage included peak river flows, the extent of flooding, levee breaks, and flood fighting activities from the northern most reaches of the Sacramento Flood Control System, south to Fresno.
Photo ID Camera System
If you are a DWR employee and don't have a photo ID badge, you should. ID badges are needed to gain access to many of our properties statewide. Contact the Photography unit for group or individual scheduling.
